Full Day Class (6 Hours): Learn unorthodox methods of construction from master artist and create a contemporary work of art. Students are encouraged to delve into their interior world as a path to creative self-discovery. Explore the symbol of the House as a metaphor for the self. These symbolic portraits will address the interplay of juxtaposing color, pattern and text using an accordion book design, housed in an easily constructed box. Students will learn from this workshop: how to build an Accordian Book Housed in a Box, Students will explore visually sensual and intriguing materials like asphaltum tar, gold leaf, beeswax with blended color pigment. Learn hand-sewn construction and binding techniques using tar- paper. Demonstrations will include a variety of experimental mix media techniques taken one step further, adding sculptural plains with glues while developing interesting surface treatments; use photo transfer and tissue collage to build up more detail in a larger book.

Grgich is a well-known portrait and book painter who generously shares her methods and magic. Integrate a intuitive approach by incorporating; drawing, composition, collage, and mixed-media sculpture. Throughout class Grgich will provide demonstrations and one on one help with composition and construction.

In this intensive class you will transform a book into a visual journal of personality and autobiography with the use of collage and paint. Anne inspires with a wide range of artistic techniques and shares her secrets providing demonstrations throughout the day in a positive atmosphere with intuitive painting assistance. Learn how to unify collage in a lively day of creating and absorbing methods to achieve Grgich's detailed ancient feel in your own work. Spend a day with Grgich, and take home a new approach to painting and seeing. Get inspired to work more freely and have your art passion awakened by the constant creative energy of the class, they will learn how to paint with coffee, beeswax, acrylics, and get the various painting surfaces of Anne Grgich’s richly painted books, you will leave with one book well on its way to being complete.

Anne Marie Grgich is a life-long self-taught artist and teacher. She first started showing her work in 1981 with invitations to teach in schools by 1983. Years ago Anne was contacted by Teesha Moore and has been teaching at various art retreats ever since. Grgich had her first museum show in 1987 and continues to be invited to exhibitions and teach at Colleges and Universities more frequently. Anne recently held a residency at Sydney College of Art, Sydney AU. Anne Grgich was delighted to receive a paid collaborative residency at Pottery Northwest at the Seattle Center in Seattle Washington.

Learn about Anne's techniques and create your own portraits of soul-composing landscapes and faces with collage and ephemera to build form with color, layering and under painting. Anne demonstrates how she gets her deep jewel-like effects. Students will create two portraits and will experience hands on and individual time with teacher throughout the day. Anne offers an amazing learning experience wherein she shares her own passionate process and infects you with it along the way. Anne Grgich gives an inspiring slide show and describes her background and influences that combine to create her unique style of painting.

Paint with puzzle and cutouts to build colorful abstract forms and sculptural structures and on hand psychedelic stenciling overlay. The layers will reveal your own textural substructures with concentrated artful delights. Chaos meets structure, the puzzle grid teaches you how to play and express yourself with brush and form in a vitreous mosaic. Grgich will give demos of her puzzle painting techniques and bring examples to share and provide you with a playful creative guidance.

The Opulent Goddess Book

Learn rudimentary approaches to book building. For beginners who want to make their own illuminating and embellished portraits without allot of fuss. “The Opulent Goddess Book" will be constructed of two gold picture frames and simple materials. Grgich assists in creating page by page Goddesses to embellish.

The Layers of Chimera

Learn the secret art of chimera layering with paper, transforming imagery by bleeding inks, gels and glazes. Anne offers a slide show of relevant works and guides students with one on one attention throughout the day. The final product will be aged and beautiful with a wax-free encaustic-like surface.
